Dog training is fun on your dog’s part as most dogs are naturally very eager to please their owners. With a few dog training tips it shouldn’t take too much of an effort for you to teach your dog the most basic commands and tricks. You do have to keep in mind that just like people, dogs learn better in a relaxed environment so you should try to make your dog training sessions as fun as possible.
One way of making your dog learn faster is to praise him each time he completes a task successfully. You can do this by giving him a treat or simply patting his head approvingly. However, you do need to give him some form of punishment if he fails at something so he won’t make the same mistake again.
Dogs typically have very short attention spans so in order to make sure that your dog gives full concentration to the training process, try to train him in a quiet place where nothing can distract him. Good dog training areas are dog-friendly parks that are not that populated, an open field or even your own backyard.
You should also instill in your dog the importance of completing every single task that you command him to do. This in turn will create good dog behavior. Encourage him to finish it even if it requires you to do a little bit of prodding or cajoling. If you allow him to leave tasks unfinished, it will be very hard for you to make him follow any more of your future commands.
Maintaining your calm throughout the entire dog training process is essential as this allows your dog to relax and concentrate on the commands. When you yell or use a high-pitched voice, your dog might associate it with the sound of barking dogs.
There will be days when your dog seems not in the mood to train and simply refuses to follow your commands. In this case, do not be tempted to use harsh words or actions on your dog as it will only shatter his self-confidence.
As mentioned earlier, dogs have short attention spans. For this reason, you should limit your training time to just a few minutes per session. If you train for too long, your dog will be unable to remember all his lessons. Ideally, each dog training session should take no longer than 20 minutes. In fact, if you are trying to train a very young puppy, you will probably lose his attention after just a couple of minutes.
Patience is the key when training a dog. Every dog has his own pace of learning so you should not hurry them up. Just continue with the encouraging words and soon enough, your dog will learn everything you want to teach him. That is the secret to dog training!
