A Well Mannered Puppy and Training Good Dog Behavior

When you’re considering getting a puppy, you need to know that it’s not always easy to raise and train a puppy and, much like children, their behavior will drive you crazy, but, the good news is that you can have a well mannered puppy with a few simple tricks.

Teaching your puppy to be well mannered and exhibit good dog behavior doesn’t necessarily require a ton of time, but you will need to be consistent in your training and, as anyone who has survived the puppy stage of life will tell you, surviving the puppy stage can be very, very tough if you’re not ready to give them the attention they require. That being said, here are a few tips that you can use when your puppy is still little that will teach him to be well mannered and help you to get through the tough times.

Puppies chew and roll and play and get into things. They don’t know about being well mannered because in the wild, puppies are encouraged to chew, because it helps them when they are teething. If you don’t make sure that your things are out of the way and your puppy’s reach and provide plenty of toys for your new puppy to chew on, your furniture, expensive clothing and shoes will all suffer. Make sure that you put all your things such as shoes in closets or away that your puppy cannot get to. Barring that, if your new best friend does get a hold of your expensive shoes, you need to make sure that he knows that shoes are a big no-no. You don’t need to “spank” your puppy to teach him this, just make sure to always give him a stern no whenever he gets near something you don’t want him to have. In exchange offer him a chew toy or bone and tell him he’s a “good boy” when he goes to these items.

When it comes to house breaking your puppy, there are a couple of different techniques you can try and some are more effective than others. Many people like to keep their puppy in a crate at night or when they are away for the day. Often, when a puppy stays in a crate, even if they have an “accident” it keeps it localized into an easy to clean up space and eventually your puppy will learn that he doesn’t like to spend time in his messes. When you are home and able to devote the attention to your puppy, though, it’s important to take the time to train your puppy that he wants to go outside to do his job. By taking him out periodically and whenever he eats and drinks, and offering encouragement when your puppy does his job outside, you are teaching your pooch that he is a “good boy” as long as he does what you expect. This helps to encourage well mannered puppies in families all the time.

Ultimately with puppies, they want to learn to do what you want them to. No body likes to be in trouble and your puppy sees you as his new “mommy” or “daddy”, so he is going to want to make sure to please you. By teaching your puppy the basics of good behavior, you will find that you have a well mannered puppy in no time.
