Walking with your dog in the park or playing with them in the backyard are both good ways for your pet to get some exercise but many dog owners would agree that biking with your dog is a lot more fun and exciting. If you have a dog that is naturally adapted to running, such as a Greyhound or an Afghan Hound, taking him along while you ride your bicycle can be a great experience for both of you. Your dog will get the exercise and dog obedience training that he needs and you will have company while biking.
Safety Issues
If you live in a crowded city, you might be hesitant to go biking with your dog for fear of its safety. However, there are many precautionary measures you can take to ensure that your dog will keep up with you as your traverse the busy streets. For instance, you can invest in a trusty product like the Walkiedog or the Springer, both of which can keep your dog on a lead without requiring you to remove any of your hands from the handlebar. Instead, these products are attached to the underside of the seat, allowing you to ride your bike in peace while being assured that your dog is right behind you at all times.
Keeping Your Dog Focused
Another common concern that you may have about biking with your dog is how to keep him from being distracted by various things that he might see along the way. An easy way to achieve this is to make sure that your dog can respond quickly to commands like “Leave it” or “Heel”. It would also be helpful if you bring some treats that can help you get his attention away from possible distractions.
Best Places to Go Biking with Your Dog
Once you are sure that your dog has mastered all the necessary commands, and you have taken all the necessary measures to keep your dog safe, you can now start a regular routine of biking with your dog.
The best places to take your dog along for a bike ride are those that have plenty of open areas where he can run freely without you worrying much about his safety. Ideal spots are parks and biking trails in forests or the countryside. However, you have to keep in mind that before you take your dog to any of these places, you should be completely confident in his ability to follow your commands all the time.
