The easiest and most commonly practiced method of potty training for dogs has always been the newspaper technique. Most people have had to deal with a dog relieving themselves in your house simply because they do not know any other place to go. Even if you think having them stay out for hours will keep them from going in the house, you are wrong. They will walk right in and let it out.
Some puppies will hide while they are going in the house because previously they have suffered some form of punishment for going inside. You need to be aware of what they are up to and catch them going. However, don’t resort to the rubbing their nose in it technique of the past. This will only teach them to fear you and not trust you.
You have to establish a way to get your puppy to go on your command. Puppy potty training can begin in the house while you start the training to teach him to go outside. First pick a consistent spot in the home, such as by the back door. Pile the newspaper around a large spot. Lead the puppy there and give him the command you want him to respond to when you want him to relieve himself. He will eventually use the spot to go to the bathroom. When he starts to go to the bathroom elsewhere, lead him to the paper to finish. Then, shower the puppy with praise as he finishes. You have to be very patient and consistent with this method. Once the command is learned and obeyed, try it outside. This is how it will click in his head to do his business outside.
There actually is other potty training for dog issues you might need to address. A condition called submissive urination can be horrible to witness or explain to guests. This is when your puppy uncontrollably will pee on the floor when someone new comes over. Your puppy could also actually wet himself on your guest. If prone to this kind of accident, it might even happen just because another dog is around. It is his abundance of excitement that causes it. This naturally can be quite humiliating for you and your guest. Reinforcing the command will help him stop doing this.
